How Good Cholesterol Turns Bad

by Health News

Researchers with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)'s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) have found new evidence to explain how cholesteryl ester transfer protein (CETP) mediates the transfer of cholesterol from "good" high density lipoproteins (HDLs) to "bad" low density lipoproteins (LDLs). These findings point the way to the design of safer, more effective next generation CETP inhibito... (read more)

Gut Bacteria May Keep Statin Response in Check

by Health News

Various bacterial-derived bile acids appear to influence the response to statin treatment, researchers found. Pretreatment levels of several primary and secondary bile acids were strongly associated with the low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol-lowering ability of simvastatin in healthy individuals, according to Rima Kaddurah-Daouk, PhD, of Duke University, and colleagues. FDA Okays Combo Pill for Diabetes, Cholesterol

Description:

Low-density lipoprotein is one of the five major groups of lipoproteins, which in order of size, largest to smallest, are chylomicrons, VLDL, IDL, LDL and HDL, that enable transport of lipids like cholesterol and triglycerides within the water-based bloodstream. Studies have shown that higher levels of LDL particles promote health problems and cardiovascular disease, they are often informally called the bad cholesterol particles, (as opposed to HDL particles, which are frequently referred to as good cholesterol or healthy cholesterol particles).
