The critical step to take for dealing with this problem could be to educate health professionals with training that can help them deal with real-world problems that are associated with the people suffering from mental illnesses. 

For instance, the dietitians and physiologists can be offered a little bit of training in psychopathology, while the psychiatrists should be exposed to the basic principles of living a healthy and fit life and the link between mind and the body. 

The focus of modern health should be to enhance the overall quality of life of a person, not only to make the people depended on medications. And, the health professionals should stop looking at a problem from only one dimension. 

If the mental health team is offered with enough training helping them to understand the link between mind and body, the physical illnesses among mental health patients can be dealt more effectively.
