When it comes to your health, there are so many pieces of advice and tips that you can find out there. Because of their sheer volume, it may be hard to determine which ones will actually help you on your health journey and which ones will probably make your health worse. Here are the five worst health advice that we commonly hear.

1. You should detox

Detoxification refers to the elimination of toxic substances that are present in the body. However, this is not a process that you can actually accomplish by bingeing on kale or drinking only coconut water for a week. As a matter of fact, detoxification is a natural process that your liver, with the help of other organs like your kidneys, is responsible for. There is no drink or food that will flush out the toxins in your body.

2. You need to take vitamins and supplements daily

This is a common misconception perpetuated by the huge market for supplements and vitamins, and the various deals and promotions provided by web traffic geeks. You definitely do not need to take supplements daily in order to stay healthy. In most cases, a balanced diet will provide all the nutrients that your body needs in order to function well and stay healthy. In some cases, overdosing on vitamins can actually harm you. For example, regular intake of vitamin E or beta-carotene actually increases your risk for developing cancer. There are, of course, certain exceptions such as if you suffer from a vitamin deficiency if you are a vegan and you need to supplement your plant-based diet with vitamins that are not present in it such as vitamin B12.

3. Chew on gum or eat celery when you are dieting

Ignoring hunger pains will definitely not do you any good in the long run. Although eating less and exercising more is a truism that often gets repeated these days, it does not mean that you have to completely ignore the signs your body is giving out. Even when you are trying to lose weight, keep in mind that it is still important to ensure that you eating healthy food that will hold you over until your next meal. On top of exercise, a balanced diet is the most important thing that you can do for your body. When you take out entire groups such as fats or carbohydrates, you will most likely need to eat more of what is left over to compensate. This is why people who do have a low-fat diet tend to eat more carbohydrates, and vice versa. When you are depriving yourself of essential nutrients that your body units, it can stimulate the production of insulin, a fat-storing hormone. If you are trying to lose weight, this is not a good thing to experience.

5. Always have a heavy breakfast

Breakfast is certainly the most important meal of the day because it provides with the energy to get started with your day. However, it is also possible to over-fuel. Heavy breakfasts tend to have too much carbohydrates, which is not advisable. In fact, having too much of anything should be avoided.
